“Letter from Birmingham Jail” 4

Why does King go into such detail to explain the basic principles and process of the nonviolent protest movement?

King is explaining the principles and process of the nonviolent protest movement to justify the causes of such activities. While using meticulous and persuasive details, King attempts to rectify the clergymen's ignorance. Protest, when first heard, mostly means negative, violent, rage, chaos, or disorder. To avoid these kinds of presumption, King explicates the purpose of protests and the process it takes. He claims protest is just when it is against "unjust laws".

King explains the basic principles and the process of the nonviolent protest movements in order for the reader to understand his point of view. Normally a protest sounds disorganized, loud, annoying, and ruthless. But King was trully trying to emphasize the fact that he has no intention of provoking violent responses, therefore his repetition of non violent protests was noticeable. He wanted to mark the idea of fighting for your beliefs and rights, in a peaceful honorable manner.
