What Effect do you suppose Williams intended to have on readers? What makes you think as you do?

The effect Williams intended to have on readers is to make the readers realize what they are missing. Williams wants to make the people realize what the celebration of self can do to the society. Williams mentions this in paragraphs six, seven, and eight by telling the reader the danger of a “User-Generated Generation” This effect is best shown in paragraph seven when he asks questions to make people think and realize that the people are too distracted to pay attention

Williams' essay provides the thought of re-evaluating our reliance on media. The effect that he provokes is that we give to much credit to the media although we are the ones that make it. In his last sentence "The danger just might be that we miss the next great book or the next great idea, or that we fail to meet the next great challenge...because we are too busy celebrating ourselves and listening to the same tune we already know by heart." makes the reader reflect on the fact that now a days we as observers really don't only observe, but also create the news and media we want to hear or see. Since we are constantly honoring ourselves, we many times ignore things that do not affect us. That is why we ignore all news we do not want to hear.

William probably intended a different affect depending on the reader. If the reader of the article were American, he/she would feel offended and deny what the article is stating. The article is accusing Americans of not being aware of the real world. Americans seem to think they know everything and would simply take offense by what Williams has to say. If the reader was of another nationality there would be a different reaction. The reader would probably debate whether it is true or not based on any Americans they know. The affect and interpretation that the reader takes depends on their experiences and what they know.
