The three last paragraphs use pathos to show the respect of King towards the clergymen. Some might argue he should have finished the essay in a strong voice to send the message clearly. However, he is a Christian, and so are the clergymen. Under God, everyone is equal. To prove brotherhood and harmony, King finishes his essay softly to gain the support and empathy of the clergymen. He even mentions "let us all hope", because he has faith the clergymen will one day be the comrades of the nonviolent protesters.
The final three paragraphs as King's conclusions were very rhetorically effective. If he had ended it by showing authority, ethos, and say that he was the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the clergymen might have thought "who is him to correct our decisions and question us?" They would have seen King as a treat. But because King ends his letter with pathos, he arouses the clergymen's sympathy. When King says to forgive him if he did done something wrong, the clergymen can not go against him or get mad at him. King didn’t do anything wrong so the clergymen don't have an excuse to go against him. If they do, it means that they are not true Christians and don’t have sympathy for people.
