“Letter from Birmingham Jail” 10

King uses various kinds of repetition—repetition of single words or phases, of sentence structures, and of sounds. Focusing on a passage of one or more paragraphs’ length, discuss the effect of King’s use of repetition.

In Paragraph 12, King mentions the word "when" 12 times. Every time I read it, my emotions ascend because the "when" indicates a situation in which there is no alternative, but a need for change. King does not state a single situation, he lists 12 of them to support the causes behind the nonviolent protests.

Through paragraph 31, Martin Luther King Jr. tries to show his reasons why he is an extremist through his repetitive phrases relating the past historical figures and actions done by them that made them famous. Martin Luther repeats Was not and And various times through the paragraph. With this method he successfully gives various points which the audience could see why he acts that way and who he regards as his influences to his actions.

In paragraph 12 King uses "when" over 10 times. This repetition method stimulates emotions, when he says "when", it is as if the reader were punched in the stomach. All the situations he mentions just seem to add up and become worse everytime, proving that it is inevitable and how unfair they trully are.

King uses repetition in paragraph 14. When King repeats the word "when", he emphasizes the problem about discrimination and injustice, and it also appeals to people's emotions. Every time he mentions "when", it makes the audience feel that the problem always happens which arouses more sympathy. Because the audience of the letter are the clergymen, every time King used the word "when" the clergymen could relate to that situation that happened to them or they have seen it.

In paragraph 31, King also repeats the word "extremist." By repeating this word, he shows that everyone is an extremist. Especially because King calls biblical figures extremist, for instance Jesus, King makes it seem that everyone goes to extremes to fight for their goal. Because he was called an extremist, the repetition of the word diminishes the negative meaning of being an extremist.
