Time-wasting mirror gazing is the negative term used for facebook/myspace/and any online social utility. It can be interpreted that checking photos, commenting on other people's profile, and ruthlessly spending time on the Internet is purely a waste of time. However, she does refute the social utility is not always useless, but sometimes useful when making new friends.

As Kyle defines, time-wasting mirror gazing is a negative term to show Wurster’s initial feeling toward social-networking sites. As Wurster says in paragraph one “My friends were joiningㅡposting their pictures, personal information, and lists of favorite everythingㅡbut to me it all seemed like time-wasting mirror gazing” shows that Wurster feels different than her friends who were joining. She feels that posting pictures, personal information is time-wasting. The use of the word but in the sentence she mentions proves that she feels contrary to her friends.

When Wurster expresses her initial view of online networks as "time-wasting mirror gazing" she does not only say that its a waste of time but she also implies that people who are "posting their pictures, personal information, and lists of favorite everything"(paragraph 1) are vain. In a later sentence she supports this idea by saying "Users now had Internet square footage to call their own, and they exploited it to admire themselves and shout their presence from international rooftop." Although this is Wurster's initial reaction to networking, she later refutes all of her first impressions when she herself becomes a user.

When Wurster says that social-networking sites seemed like "time-wasting mirror gazing, Wurster is showing her dislike towards the sites. Like Kristeena said, Wurster thinks that Facebook and MySpace are a waste of time. She makes a metaphor that doing Facebook and MySpace is the same as gazing at the mirror. Gazing at the mirror will not get anyone to anywhere; it is just a waste of time. Later in paragraph 6 when Wurster mentions the negative sides of social-networking sites, she says that many of her friends "spend half their waking hours refining their own pages and improving their skills as voyeur as they visit others' pages." Time-wasting mirror gazing means that social-networking sites consume a lot of time that will not get anyone somewhere.

Time-wasting mirror gazing is referring to the personal space of the individuals in a social-networking site. When an account is created, one is redirected to the new space provided to the user to decorate and show oneself to the world. However, all this is really time-wasting mirror gazing because the profile is seen mostly by the owner, and the owner of the profile does not need to be part of the networking society to see oneself, a mirror is enough. Also, friends are meant to be seen in real life, and interact in real life, not through pictures and virtual activities. So, all this decorating profiles and visiting others' profiles is a waste of time because interaction can be better in real life.

Wurster by "time-wasting mirror gazing" means that the network sites are not only time wasting but it is also very addicting. These sites in other words are hypnotizing. Once a person gets involved with these sites, they cannot take their eyes off the screen. Instead of wasting time on these sites, people can go out and take a walk or enjoy a great book.

By saying "time-wasting mirror gazing," Wuster is mocking all of those who spend time posting pictures and personal information. She believes that those actions are a waste of time. Also by going through the action of posting pictures and writing personal information, the person actually has to see him/herself again and again as he/she posts up his/her picture, thus the author calling it mirror gazing.
