“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. “

In his antithesis, also his opening sentence, Thoreau is supporting his decision of going to the woods by demonstrating that if he did the opposite, the outcome would have been regrettable. In other words, if A were the opposite of B, Thoreau is justifying his actions and supporting A by clearly stating that its opposite (B) would only offer lament. His contradicting points offer a sense of balance and parallelism. One comment without the other would have been weak. If instead, he would have stated “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to tech” it would have been a mere statement of his personal desire. By expounding on the possibility of regret, he gives material that provides motive for individual identification, and at the same time, transforms an opinion of personal desire into a justified declaration.

The antithesis Thoreau states in the first paragraph is, "For most men, it appears to me, are in strange uncertainty about it,whether it is of the devil or God...that it is the chief end of man here to, 'glorify God and enjoy him forever.' It opposes his thesis about finding the "essential facts of life", because he states that other men are in "strange uncertainty" of just living in Gods glory.

Gabriela- while that is an antithesis in its literal definition, the question applies to rhetorical definitions, meaning a figure of speech in which sharply contrasting ideas are juxtaposed in a balanced or parallel phrase or grammatical structure, as in "Hee for God only, shee for God in him" (John Milton). Thus, the original writer, dani.k was closer to the core principle, that is the actual antithesis- "I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived,“ wherein the author juxtaposes the concepts of death and life to contrast the ideas and define his conceptualization of truly living, that is finding the essentials and living deliberately.
