Explain the meaning of “dear” and “mean.”

Thoreau uses the word dear in paragraph 1 to describe how he cherishes life. “If it proved to be mean,” means that if life in its simplest form turns out to be harsh and humanly impossible to bear, he wants to figure it out first-hand.
