“But Enough About You” 11

In paragraph 8 Williams says, “Millions of Americans have come to regard the act of reading a daily newspaper—on paper—as something akin to being dragged by their parents to Colonial Williamsburg.” What is Colonial Williamsburg? What are the implications of this reference?

Colonial Williamsburg, was once colonial Virginia's capital; now the city is an interpretation of colonial America. Williams uses the example of Colonial Williamsburg to show how obsolete he believes the newspaper on paper has become to many. Because of the online media that most everyone has access to, newspapers are becoming disregarded and considered a hindrance. Why should people read something that is "flat, one-dimensional, unexciting, emitting a slight whiff of decay (paragraph 8)" when they could sit in front of a computer or a t.v. to view the news?
